2 Men Charged After Suspected Meth Lab Bust

AMITY (AP) -- Two Maine brothers have been charged after police say they found them cooking the ingredients for methamphetamine.

Maine State Police spokesman Steve McCausland said police received information about a suspected meth lab in a remote hunting camp in northern Maine. Police say they went to the camp in Amity Tuesday night and found the two men in the suspected lab.

Twenty-eight-year-old Kevin Carton and his brother 26-year-old Micah Carton of New Limerick were arrested and charged.

Police say the camp owner did not know about the suspected drug activity.

McCausland says Tuesday's incident was the 18th time this year that police and drug enforcement officials have responded to a suspected meth lab, an all-time record for the state.

It could not be determined of the two men have lawyers.

folks must be protected for the toxins go into your pours and lungs AUGUSTA, Maine — The national problem of homemade drug labs, mostly making methamphetamine, is growing in Maine and its cost is hitting law enforcement at all levels of government, including the state Department of Environmental Protection.

“It is very much a concern,” said Roy McKinney, director of the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency. “This has been a big problem in other areas of the country and we have seen a significant increase in Maine over the last several months.”

In budget year 2011, MDEA had six calls to deal with meth labs in the state. Since November 2011 the agency has tallied 14 drug labs with all but one involving the making of methamphetamine. One lab was making a synthetic version of the powerful psychedelic drug dimethyltryptamine.

Five of the labs this year were in Aroostook County: two in Presque Isle, one in Easton, one in Van Buren and one in Connor.

“These homemade labs are very dangerous,” McKinney said. “They use chemicals that when mixed together can cause toxic gas and the process creates heat that can cause fire and explosions.”

He said there have been several instances where the container used to mix the chemicals, often a 2-liter soda bottle, develops a hole from the heat of the chemical reaction and causes a fire.

“We had one where it looked like a flame thrower with flames shooting out the side of it,” McKinney said. “These are dangerous situations.”

He said MDEA has developed an online training program to help local law enforcementrecognize potential labs. He said agents are sent immediately when a call comes from local police that they have a possible lab.

“We have trained agents to identify the chemicals and the equipment that might be used,” McKinney said.

He said responding to a report of a drug lab has become one of the highest priorities for his agency because of the danger posed to the general public by the labs. He said a big concern is the cost of responding to a possible lab.

“We had one on a weekend and everybody was on overtime,” McKinney said. “We were using a federal grant to pay for dealing with labs, but that grant ran out on Christmas Day and we are scrambling to find ways to pay for these now.”

The department still has state funds for this work, but the concern is that this money will be exhausted if the number of labs continues to grow.

Public Safety Commissioner John Morris warned lawmakers earlier this year of the growing bills for meth lab investigations. He said the costs are significant and growing.

“Every time we break a meth lab it costs $15,000,” he said, “because of the care we have to take and the hazmat that we have to send in.”

He said the chemicals used to make meth and other designer drugs are very dangerous, some toxic and others explosive. He said it is a growing cost as drug labs have been raided across the state and his costs do not include the expenses of local police and other first responders.

“We often have a fire department standing by at one of these incidents,” McKinney said, “because there is a real danger from even these simple labs we have found so far.”

Barbara Parker, director of response services at the Department of Environmental Protection, said her agency also is facing increased costs because of meth and other drug labs. She said her hazmat teams are trained to deal with a range of toxic and dangerous chemicals, including those used to make illegal drugs.

“Our biggest cost is manpower,” she said. “We send at least two people to every one of these and it can take a long time to assess the situation and clean up the lab site so the police can do their job.”

Parker said there is also a cost for such items as oxygen bottles and disposable suits that vary based on the incident. She said it can cost just a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars for the DEP to do its job at a drug lab site.

“We have been lucky that all of these labs have been small,” she said, “In Washington state they had a railroad car buried in the ground that was being used as a big lab.”

Parker also is concerned about the increasing number of labs and the costs to her division. The response services are funded by a dedicated tax on those Maine companies that produce hazardous materials and she said handling meth labs set up by criminals was not a consideration when the fund was set up.

BATH, Maine — A Bath man was charged with aggravated trafficking in methamphetamine Wednesday afternoon after agents from the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency raided his apartment at 24 Dummer St. and said they found evidence that the highly addictive drug was cooked there.

Mark Corson, 35, remained at Two Bridges Regional Jail on Wednesday afternoon, held on $2,000. His initial court appearance is set for Friday.

Black MDEA vans rolled into Bath just before noon Wednesday. Working with the Bath Police Department, agents — dressed in orange protective gear — raided Corson’s downtown apartment, searching for the highly explosive chemicals used to cook the drug.

“Bath police got a complaint about possible meth being made there recently, and we started an investigation,” Maine DEA supervisor James Pease said Wednesday.

“Unlike most drugs that come into Maine, which have already been made and processed, meth can be made here with pseudoephedrine and other chemicals you can buy,” he said. “During that process, there can be fires, explosions, and dangerous gases can be made.”

Agents “found evidence that he was making methamphetamine” in the apartment, Pease said.

While residents of the building and surrounding homes are not in any danger now, he declined to comment when asked if they had been at risk previously.

Corson’s charge was elevated to aggravated trafficking in methamphetamine because the apartment is near the Dike Newell elementary school off High Street, according to Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

This is not the first time a suspected meth lab has been uncovered in Bath, Pease said, noting a 2010 raid of an operation on Washington Street.

McCausland said Wednesday’s raid marks the fourth suspected meth lab shut down in Maine this year, with 13 discovered in 2012.

YARMOUTH, Maine — A 47-year-old Freeport man has been indicted after drug agents say he sold high-quality methamphetamine within 1,000 feet of a school in July.

Patrick Clark, 47, of Freeport was indicted by a Cumberland County grand jury on one count of Class A aggravated trafficking in scheduled drugs and one count of Class B trafficking in scheduled drugs.

Cmdr. Scott Pelletier of the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency said Wednesday that undercover agents purchased just less than 4 grams of methamphetamine from Clark on July 15 at a school off Route 1.

Clark allegedly sold high-quality “crystal meth” unlike that produced in Maine, leading agents to believe he was part of a larger drug ring.

“Although we do see small, ‘one-pot’ meth labs [in Maine], typically [they do not produce] this high-grade crystal that looks almost like broken glass, or ice,” Pelletier said. “We typically see that from out West. When we see homemade meth in the state, it’s usually not as pure.”

No other arrests have been made, although Pelletier said the investigation continues and he expects more people will be charged.

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Maine Drug Enforcement Agency says its investigation into a meth lab in Presque Islehas led to two arrests and a warrant for a third suspect.

On Wednesday, police arrested 28-year-old Leland Alger of Presque Isle and issued an arrest warrant for 21-year-old Ronald Lewis of Littleton on charges of trafficking methamphetamine. A third man, 23-year-old Ray Varney of Houlton, was arrested on Friday, a day after the meth labreportedly was discovered.

Authorities allegedly discovered the meth lab in a Main Street apartment in Presque Isle and a team seized chemicals and equipment that had been used to make the drug.

Agents believe Lewis is aware he is being sought by police and is actively evading arrest. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call the MDEA office in Houlton at 532-5169, their local police, or Aroostook CountyCrimestoppers at 1-800-638-8477.

It is likely that others will face charges before the investigation is done.

All of these crimes are Class B felonies, for which the maximum

punishment is 10 years in prison.

ROCKLAND (WGME) -- Police in the midcoast say they broke up a meth-making operation bringing this year's total to nearly 20, which is a record in Maine.

Drug agents in hazmat suits surrounded a Subaru in Rockland Thursday morning. Inside, they say they found dangerous chemicals used to make meth.

Police pulled over the vehicle earlier in the week after they say the driver was driving erratically. 

31-year-old Jonathan Davis was taken to the hospital for evaluation, and turned himself in to drug agents in Rockland who arrested him immediately.
