Maine: Bed and Breakfast Murders

Killed: 4

In the quiet, secluded town of Newry, the discovery of four bodies at the Black Bear Bed & Breakfast over the 2006 Labor Day Weekend came as a horrifying shock. Killed were guest James Whitehurst, 50, inn owner Julie Bullard, 65, her daughter Selby Bullard, 30, and friend Cynthia Beatson, 43. All four bodies were dismembered; Whitehurst's was burned and dumped in the woods 15 miles away.Christian Nielsen (pictured), 31, a cook who had worked at another inn in a nearby town, was convicted of the murders and received a life sentence.MarylandMaryland: Dawson House Firebombing

On October 16, 2002, a fatal fire claimed the lives of a courageous Baltimore woman and her family, after neighbor Darrell Brooks (pictured) firebombed their home. Angela Dawson, her husband Carnell and their five children all perished in an attack triggered by Angela telling police about criminal activity in her neighborhood. The murders are considered a fatal consequence of the controversial inner-city Stop Snitchin' ethos which threatens potential police informants with violence. Brooks pleaded guilty to the murders, and the house where the Dawsons once lived is now the Dawson Safe Haven Community Center (sign pictured).

Massachusetts: Wakefield Massacre

Killed: 7

Reportedly fueled by financial problems - his car was up for repossession and his wages were being garnished to pay overdue taxes to the IRS - software engineerMichael "Mucko" McDermott (pictured) targeted the Human Resources and Accounting departments at Edgewater Technologies in Wakefield during his December 26, 2000, shooting spree. After killing seven coworkers, whom police believe McDermott selected deliberately, he did not resist when police arrested him (pictured), telling them that he did not speak German. At trial, McDermott, a former Navy electrician, claimed that he had travelled back in time to kill Nazis. He was found guilty of seven counts of murder in the first degree and sentenced to seven consecutive life sentences without a chance of parole.

Michigan: Bath School Disaster

Killed: 45 + Self; Injured: 58

In the worst school mass murder in U.S. history, Andrew P. Kehoe (pictured), upset by a tax conflict, planted dynamite at a school in Bath. On May 18, 1927, Kehoe killed his wife, detonated the explosives at the school, tearing it apart (pictured) and finally exploded his own car, killing himself and several others.

Minnesota: Red Lake Massacre

Killed: 10 + Self; Injured: 5

On March 21, 2005, Jeffrey Weise (pictured), a resident of Red Lake Indian Reservation, killed his grandfather and his grandfather's girlfriend before proceeding to his high school and opening fire on students and faculty. Police responding to the scene cornered Weise, 16, in a classroom where he took his own life with a shotgun blast to the chin. According to records, Weise spent a lot of time on the internet, where he posted on message boards on the topic of zombies, death and horrorcore music. Mississippi: Lockheed Martin Shooting

Killed: 6 + Self; Injured: 8

At the Lockheed Martin plant in Meridian, assembly line worker Douglas Williams(pictured) had a history making racist comments to his coworkers. On July 8, 2003, Williams was required to attend a diversity-awareness class. Instead, he left the meeting, went to his car and returned ready for battle. Armed with a shotgun and a Ruger Mini-14 rifle and draped with extra ammunition, Williams began firing at the class, shooting 14 co-workers, eight of them black. Five of the six who died from Williams' bullets were black; witnesses reported that Williams seemed to be aiming for black coworkers, particularly those who had reported him to human resources for his comments. At the end of his ten minute killing spree, Williams shot himself in front of his girlfriend, who also worked at the factory.

Missouri: Kirkwood Town Council Shooting

Killed: 6 + Self; Injured: 1

Outraged by a racially-charged dispute over land development in the Meacham Park area of St. Louis County, construction company owner Charles Lee "Cookie" Thornton shot several people at a Kirkwood town council meeting on February 7, 2008, killing two council members, two police officers, a public works director and Kirkwood mayor, Mike Swoboda (pictured). Swoboda did not die at the time of the shooting; he spent seven months in the hospital before succumbing to his injuries. Thornton, who had amassed over a hundred municipal citations for performing construction work without proper permits, was shot and killed by police.

Montana: Motel Murders

Killed: 3; Injured: 1

David Thomas Dawson was executed by the state of Montana in August 2006 for the murders of three members of a family staying at a motel in Billings. Dawson (pictured) was staying next door to David and Monica Rodstein and their two children Andrew, 11, and Amy, 15. On April 18, 1986, an armed Dawson forced his way into their room and bound all four family members with duct tape. Dawson gagged them, stole their money, and then strangled David, Monica and Andrew with a telephone cord. Their bodies were discovered two days later in Dawson's own motel room, where Dawson was still staying. Amy survived the attack and was able to testify against Dawson at trial.

"I'll be Famous"

Robert Hawkins

By the age of six, according to the Omaha World-Herald, Robert Hawkins, the killer of eight Christmas shoppers at an Omaha mall in 2007, had been on medication for depression. At the time, he lived with his father and stepmother, his father's second wife. When he was two years old, his father had separated from his biological mother, an alleged substance abuser, and had taken him and his older sister away. He had gained two stepsiblings when his father remarried, and he had soon developed serious behavioral problems. He often acted out, biting, kicking, and hitting, so he was sent to therapy.

A fierce custody battled ensued, with the mother blaming the father for these problems, but the father countering with attacks on her allegedly poor parenting skills. A judge left the children with the father.

Robert continued to seek attention through quirky behaviors and general trouble-making. Finally, when he was fourteen, he threatened to kill his stepmother and so was admitted to a psychiatric hospital. He remained in treatment for nine months, but subsequently had two more admissions for a mood disorder, attention-deficit disorder, and oppositional defiance disorder. He also abused alcohol and drugs, so he ended up in foster care and group homes, as well as treatment programs. He seemed to enjoy the attention, especially from kids in the programs who looked up to him. However, he yearned to be home. He also failed to respond positively to the treatment, instead continuing to get into trouble in school and, according to some, selling drugs.

By his junior year in high school, Hawkins decided to drop out. He moved in with his father again, but, by his account, he was soon kicked out and so moved in with a friend's family. Seeming like a "lost pound puppy," he developed a belief that the world was against him. It made him feel as though he were a burden to those he loved, and this bothered him a great deal.

In November 2007, the nineteen-year-old faced a hearing for being in possession of alcohol. Then a girlfriend broke up with him, and, over an alleged theft, he lost his job at a local McDonald's. Angry and disappointed how life was turning out, he obtained, either by permission or theft, an SKS semi-automatic Russian military rifle owned by a relative. On December 6, he penned a suicide note which indicated that "now he would be famous," and went to the Westroads Mall in Omaha, Neb. There, dressed in a camouflage vest, he proceeded to the Von Maur department store and started shooting. Eight people died and five others were wounded. Finally, Hawkins turned the weapon on himself. It seemed he'd decided that life wasn't worth living, but in keeping with his recurring bids for attention had decided to pay the world back for his pain and make sure he was noticed. That's generally the goal of mass murders committed by adolescents.

Hawkins gave several signals that he could turn violent, given the right set of triggers, but, like some other notorious killers, successfully hid his true intent.

Murder in Augusta Maine

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - An Augusta man has pleaded not guilty to killing his live-in girlfriend.

Justin Pillsbury, 39, remained held without bail after entering his plea to murder charges at an arraignment Wednesday in Kennebec County Superior Court.

Prosecutors say Pillsbury fatally stabbed Jillian Jones in their apartment in November in a fit of jealousy because she had talked to another man on the phone. Authorities say Pillsbury then tried to kill himself.

The couple's roommate discovered both bodies.

Pillsbury's lawyer tells the Kennebec Journal that while he could not comment on the substance of the case he is waiting for some discovery material from the state and Pillsbury's family is standing by him.

The attorney says would oppose the state's attempt to get records of Pillsbury's medical treatment.
